Reflecting a mixture of absurdity, subtle irony,

hope and disillusion. Vasilev paints his own country with the various tints of the pre and post-communism

era, achieving a work that at stages recalls nostalgia but never without

falling into its obvious and overplayed traps.

unique voice documenting
a quirkly yet wonderful narrative.

About the photographer

Vladimir Vasilev

Vladimir Vasilev was born in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. His passion for photography appears after an internship done at age 15. Under pressure from his parents, he starts studying engineering and stops in 1998 to dedicate himself to his passion. It’s in the “Karkelanov” advertising studio in Sofia, Bulgaria, that he learns his trade as an assistant photographer and lighting engineer. In 2001, he settles in France. Independent photographer since 2008, he dedicates himself to his favorite themes which are Bulgaria, gypsy camps and ghettos, in the form of reports and portraits.
